Following changes appear in the dentin-pulp complex with time.
- Decrease volume of the pulp chamber and root canal due to continuous deposition of dentin.
- Decreased vascular supply to pulp.
- Reduction in the number of cells. The number of cells becomes half between ages 20 to 70.
- Loss of myelinated and unmyelinated axons leads to a reduction in the sensitivity of dentin.
- Increase in dead tracks and sclerotic dentin.
- The appearance of areas of dystrophic calcification.
- Increased sclerotic dentin deposition leads to increased brittleness and decreased permeability.
